Viewpoint – Subway shouldn’t be only campus food option

By Dylan Bradley/editor-in-chief

TCC should have cheaper healthy food options for students.

With the exception of TR Campus, students do not have options outside of Subway for on-campus dining, which is too expensive to eat every day.

Not to say that Subway should be removed from the menu. Processed lunch meat with veggies and dressing on fresh-baked bread have their time and place.

But $5 a day for a sandwich is too much.

Why don’t healthy dollar menus exist? Fast-food dollar menu options are usually disgusting and definitely not healthy.

As of now, most students don’t have any options as filling as a sandwich from Subway. That means if they don’t have $5, they aren’t going to have as much food for the money.

That’s not right. Students could accomplish so much more in their day with the proper nutrition.

With such limited options, students are more likely to turn to vending machines, which are basically the same prices as Subway.

It’s a vicious cycle. Once students are tired of vending machine lunches, they move to the more expensive Subway option.

Then when the money runs out, they either go back to the vending machines or just do without.

More options mean better performing students.

Every other part of TCC is set up to give students the chance to succeed. For the most part, the teachers here don’t worry about problems with administration or their students. They worry about how to best teach.

For the most part, students can show up to class, pay attention, do their homework and succeed.

It’s like someone tried to give students an extra leg up but forgot to apply the student discount. Students and teachers need to eat to keep their minds fresh and bodies strong.

If they can’t afford the food that’s nearby, the only people benefiting are Subway and those who can afford it.
