Smithsonian exhibit will visit SE Campus library in January

SE’s Judith Carrier Library has a special exhibit coming in January for students to both learn from and enjoy.

The Smithsonian Institution will bring Changing America: The Emancipation Proclamation, 1863 and the March on Washington, 1963 to the campus Jan. 12-Feb. 19.

“The American Library Association offered a grant, and we applied,” library services assistant director Tracey Minzenmayer said.

The Carrier Library was one of 50 institutions granted this exhibit.

“We were given special consideration because we’re in our second year of the Created Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle grant,” Minzenmayer said.

In this exhibition, students can see the struggles of two individuals from history that worked to change the circumstances they were living in through organization, bold acts and vision.

“I hope students gain a greater appreciation for the courage and sacrifices of the pioneers of the Civil Rights Movement,” she said.

Minzenmayer recalled one of her favorite parts of having the Created Equal grant programs was seeing parents bring their children to the events or seeing a daughter bring her mother.

“It’s important that the history of the Civil Rights Movement not be forgotten,” she said.
