Students can improve communication, writing and speech delivery through campus speech labs.
TCC labs allow students to keep active and strengthen related skills.
“The biggest thing I think people would need to utilize me for is the public speaking aspects, which incorporate a bunch of different things,” said NW student and peer tutor Amy Barnett.
Topics include public speaking, PowerPoint, delivery skills, outlining, etc.
“I can relate to the people that are having problems,” Barnett said. “This is what I did from my own experience. This is what I can offer other students.”
Campus labs don’t limit students to speech classes.
“We cover anything that requires you to do speaking, writing communication, body language or any of that,” said Latesha Alexander, speech instructional associate.
TR Campus speech lab offers students videotaping equipment to refine posture and speech delivery.
“If a person hasn’t been to school in years, we are here to help and empower them,” Alexander said. “Speech sometimes is one of the most scariest subjects.”
The language barrier can be the challenge for some.
“For me, it helped me a lot because I’m not from this country. I didn’t know what PowerPoint was, so they helped me a lot,” said TR student Lulu Eudeh.
Another TR student, Dylan Jackson, said the staff was really concise and got straight to the point.
“Everybody in the speech lab is good at making something a lot more simple than it is because you can overthink an assignment,” Jackson said.
Various TCC campuses offer these services to students who need assistance.
“I think if more people knew about the speech lab, it would be useful for other students,” he said.
