TR will host financial advising workshop for first-time students

By Audrey Werth/tr news editor

Financial coach Sean Fanning from the YWCA will host a financial advising workshop for first-time college students April 28 on the TR Campus.

“I think growing up, no one really tells us how to use money and be wise about it, so I think this is a good platform to discuss those things like college costs, credit basics and to let students know what help is available in the community as well,” TR success coach Babita Daware said.

Fanning will inform students about the services they offer at the college, and then students will play a game of financial Jeopardy to learn more about personal finance.

“It is a fun and educational way to dig a little deeper into the core competencies of personal finance, and everyone gets some free candy,” he said.

For about a year and a half, the YWCA has worked in partnership with TR to provide financial assistance to students.

Financial coaches are available to meet with students in the financial aid office 9 a.m.-5 p.m. every Tuesday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. every Thursday.

One program offered, the Matched Savings Incentives, is meant to help students get on track with a savings account.

“As incentive, the YWCA will match a student’s savings if they follow through with the savings matching program,” Daware said.

Students can work with coaches through one of the YWCA’s established programs or through individual coaching.

“We cover six core content areas: goal setting, budgeting, bank and savings plans, debt management and credit, taxes and building assets safely,” Fanning said. “In individual coaching, we work with each person on applying these concepts.”

The April 28 advising workshop will be held noon-1 p.m. in the River Room (TRTR 1020).

Interested students should RSVP on the student hub. For more information, contact Daware at 817-515-1712.
