The South Campus Film Club is gearing up for its annual Horror Film Festival Oct. 26 to celebrate Halloween.

The festival will feature original short horror films made by club members and others interested in film, said South fine arts instructor and festival founder Molly Floyd.

“I think this is maybe the fifth year that we’ve done the festival,” she said. “We started off with one film and then the next year we had two. The festival has just grown and grown, and now we don’t know how many movies we will show, but last year we had at least 16 films.”

South student Zach Blackwell said horror now has many subgenres and overlaps other film genres to introduce fresh, new elements.

“Horror is simply something horrifying that is visually or audibly scary,” he said. “Suspense is something that puts you on the edge of your seat. It’s a feeling that the audience gets when watching the picture that makes them cringe in anticipation to what’s going to happen next.”

Blackwell said it’s Floyd’s positive character and willingness to help that makes the festival work.

“She’s awesome,” Blackwell said. “She’s so helpful like when students need rides to other campuses possibly for shooting scenes. She’s an amazing person.”

Floyd said the event is simply about letting aspiring young filmmakers hone their craft.

“We take films from anybody,” she said. “Come out and enjoy the movies and have a great time.”

The festival is $2 for TCC students, faculty, staff and the general public.

The show is 7-8:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at the South Recital Hall (SREC 1110).
