NW holds Sadie Hawkins dance

By Bethany Sanderson/reporter

TCC NW presents its second Sadie Hawkins Dance and Ballroom Dance-Off 7:30-10 p.m. Feb. 11 in WSTU 1303.

Tickets for the night cost $7 for singles and $10 for couples. Proceeds go to Homes for Our Troops.

A local fundraiser sponsored by the Northwest Dance Club, the cause exists to honor the brother of NW dance alumnus Michele Springer, Lance Craig Springer, who lost his life in Iraq.

In her brother’s memory, Michele Springer began the cause to give back by building homes for returning troops. She said her brother was known for his sweet heart. When in the war, Springer requested care packages from home have books and candy that he could hand out to Iraqi children.

“The money allows for items such as locks to be put on doors of the homes,” said NW dance associate professor Amy Sleigh.

The dance will include cha cha and waltz lessons for all who attend.

“We like to have the event around Valentine’s Day, for love,” Sleigh said.

Michelle Becerra, dance club president, said last year’s dance did not have a good turnout because of the snow.

“We want everyone to come and have fun,” she said. “Every little bit of money counts.”

The event is open to the public.

“We invite people from all over the community, anyone can come, any age,” said NW Dance Club vice president Tiffany Willis.

Participants will have big band and Latin mood music for dancing with their valentines.

The dance-off begins with a round when judges will tap on shoulders for dancers to stay in or sit down, “sort of like in the movie Grease,” Willis said.

According to the club’s website, “A love for dance and love for our troops fueled the idea of a Sadie Hawkins Day dance during Valentine’s weekend.”
