In year one, NW wins best chapter, advances to state

By Rhiannon Saegert/nw news editor

The NW Campus Student Government Association was named Best Chapter of the Year at the regional level of the Texas Junior College Student Government Association.

“That makes our campus eligible to win the state award come April,” NW SGA president Nathan Capper said.

At the regional level, each chapter must present a five-minute speech to the other chapters. Each SGA chapter in each region has four votes to cast, and the chapter who receives the most votes wins.

The NW Campus SGA chapter formed in October, which gave the group a short time to write its constitution.

“For us to win that quickly is unbelievable,” SGA vice-president Joseph Frizzell said.

Frizzell said to win at the regional level, a chapter needs to focus on presenting great leadership skills and dedication.

“We won the vote because of the strength of our story,” secretary Michael Robertson said. “All throughout the fall semester, we worked around four hours a week to create our constitution,” he said. “We did not work from a model. There was no model.”

Capper said many of the other teams knew each other from past conferences.

“Most of them [the other teams] have been in Region 2 for years,” Capper said.

“We’ve had minimal guidance from professors or advisors,” Robertson said.

NW SGA will compete for the state award on April 11.
