Twelve teams squared off against one another during the SE Campus intramural dodgeball tournament Sept. 18, which involved 72 players.
Many of the students were from Phi Theta Kappa and the Latin Club.
The single-elimination tournament was played best out of five. Each team was allowed six players, five on the court and one player substituting. Every team was required to have at least one female participant on the floor at all times.
“We had a really good turnout,” said kinesiology instructor Shahzad Nazir, who coordinated the event. “A lot of student clubs participated this semester.”
Organizers gave prizes to the top two teams. Los Aztecas, the first-place team, won Adidas duffel bags. The second-place Free Agents received TCC intramural drawstring bags.
After being defeated last semester by the Gym Class Heroes, Los Aztecas player Salvador Ramirez said before the games, “I’m here to get that title back.”
After eight matches, the semifinals came down to four teams: Kappa vs. Los Aztecas and Free Agents vs. Irish Car Bombs. Los Aztecas bolted past Kappa 3-1 en route to the finals while the Irish Car Bombs fell to the Free Agents. In the final, Los Aztecas beat the Free Agents to claim their crown as champions.
Evelyn Parkhurst, kinesiology instructor and co-coordinator of the event, said she enjoys putting on the tournaments.
“I love doing this,” she said. “It gives the kids something to do and keeps them out of trouble.”
Nazir said he wants to have the best possible intramural events for SE Campus, which even means paying for officiating crews out of his own pocket.
“We really try to put on a good program here at SE,” Nazir said.
