Students looking to gain publication experience and submit their artwork can do so with Pennie Boyett’s SE Campus literary art magazine club.
Boyett said the magazine still needs a name and students can submit ideas.
Boyett, who once worked for The Dallas Morning News, wants students to experience what it’s like to work at a print publication.
“This is an internship for students,” she said. “A student that works on this magazine can say, ‘I did this.’ You can go places with that.”
Boyett said SE Campus has not had a magazine in 10 years.
“Spring of 1999 was the last issue,” she said. “I started working here in 2002, and it seemed like people would say ‘We’re going to get a magazine’ … but every year, it seems to never take off.”
Boyett said the magazine will have contributions from students who submit short stories, poetry, pictures and music.
SE student Justin Bell said the magazine could be a success.
“I think everybody has a lot to say,” he said.
K.C. Jenkins, a SE Campus adjunct art instructor, will work with Boyett on the magazine and plans to submit some work of her own.
“This is another outlet for our students,” she said.
SE student Sasha Columbus is looking forward to other students’ ideas.
“I used to submit art in literary magazines in high school,” she said. “I want to see other people’s artistic side.”
Boyett said the direction of the magazine is up to the students who are on staff.
“Students will evaluate what will and won’t go in the magazine,” she said. “We might want to put the magazine online, but there’s nothing like the physical feel of it. Plus, it feels legit.”
SE student Nick Kress said he plans to submit drawings for the magazine.
“This magazine is a way I can physically have my art in place instead of just putting my work online,” he said. “I think my work, as well as other artists’ work, will be much more appreciated because of that.”
President of the magazine Catherine Hart said the literary magazine gives her a chance to have creative control.
“This is a good chance to write my own stuff and see what other students are creating,” she said.
