Mayra Olivares-Urueta is the new TR director of student development services. She attended the University of North Texas and the University of Oklahoma, gathering a doctorate in philosophy, a master’s degree in human relations and two bachelor’s degrees in arts and international arts. In her many positions in higher education, Olivares-Urueta has focused mostly on student success, particularly with first-generation and low-income students.
Now-Jan. 31 The SE library and the health and physical education department are sponsoring a health and fitness display that illustrates current fitness trends and ways to improve physical fitness at TCC. The display includes books and DVDs available for rent through the library on popular exercise styles such as Pilates, yoga and tai chi.
Jan. 30 The NE Student Leadership Academy will present Mentoring 11 a.m.-noon in the Galley (NSTU 1506) on NE Campus. The program will explain opportunities available for the students and the concept of mentoring.
Jan. 30 SE student activities is offering WebAdvisor training 2-3 p.m. in the SE library. The seminar teaches students how to navigate WebAdvisor and explains what services are available. Students can learn how to perform the most commonly requested tasks such as checking grades and attendance and using the class planner.
Jan. 30 Lisa Benedetti, assistant professor of speech, will present The Art of Communication, a student success seminar, 12:30-1:30 p.m. in Center Corner (NSTU 1615A) on NE Campus. Students can pick up tips for communicating with faculty and obtaining successful networking skills.
Jan. 31 The South Campus Transfer Fair will feature university recruiters 9 a.m.-1 p.m. to assist students planning to transfer to four-year colleges. Jan. 31 SE Campus will host networking presentations by Darrell Whitsell 10:15-11:15 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the North Ballroom. Students will learn different networking skills such as basic communication, stress management and body language needed when searching for a job.
Jan. 31 The student success seminar Successful Testing will be 12:30-1:30 p.m. in Center Corner (NSTU 1615A) on NE Campus. Academic advisor Kim Eason will help students in controlling their test anxiety and tell them how to answer different types of questions.
Feb. 1-28 The SE library will display One Life: The Mask of Lincoln. The exhibit will have 10 portraits of Abraham Lincoln from the National Portrait Gallery. The portraits chart his life from freshman congressman to one of his final photographs as president. This portfolio was made possible by a grant from the Smithsonian Women’s Committee.
Feb. 1 NE Campus is offering free Zumba classes 2:30-3:30 p.m. every Monday and Friday through the month of March in Center Corner (NSTU 1615A). Zumba is a fitness program infused with Latin and other international music and dance. Students and employees are welcome to attend. No registration is required.
Feb. 1 SE health and physical education will host a dodgeball tournament at 1 p.m. in ESEB 1210. Although pre-registration was required to participate, everyone is invited to watch. Feb. 2 Danishes with the Director 8:30-10:30 a.m. in the Riverfront Café allows weekend college students on TR Campus to meet Wendy Jasper-Martinez, TR director of academic affairs. Students can eat a light breakfast, have a morning beverage and discuss their first-week anxieties, issues or questions with faculty.

Feb. 5 TR Campus’ lunchtime workshops start this semester with TR academic advisor Keisha Shelton presenting Ready, Set, Plan!, a game-plan discussion with a focus on student goals and objectives. The Success Series will include more lunchtime workshops all with a “Commit to Complete” agenda as a TR initiative to encourage students to graduate. Shelton encourages students to “own their TCC experience” and to do so by planning, preparing and completing goals. Lunch will be served during the speech noon-1 p.m. in the TR Discover Center (TRTR 3114A).

Feb. 6 Carter BloodCare will be on South Campus for a blood drive 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The blood drive is located in a mobile unit on the SSTU patio.
Feb. 6 NE Campus will participate in the Carter BloodCare blood drive 9 a.m.-4 p.m. near the Student Center and chessboard. Volunteers donating blood must weigh more than 110 pounds and be at least 17 years of age and have a valid ID. Feb. 6 South health services will sponsor free confidential HIV/AIDS testing 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Health Center (SACC 1331). Results will be available through the AIDS Outreach Center.
