An expert on World War II artifacts will talk about the countless cultural treasures stolen by the Nazis.
Author Robert M. Edsel will be on SE Campus at 7 p.m. Sept. 25 in the C.A. Roberson Theatre to discuss his book Saving Italy: The Race to Rescue a Nation’s Treasures from the Nazis.
The book covers the 1940s when the masterpieces of ancient Rome and the Italian renaissance were threatened. In the book, a portrait painter and art professor race to find billions of dollars of art, such as Michelangelo’s David and Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper, missing from museums in Florence and Naples.
“He researches cultural treasures that were stolen or were attempted to be stolen during World War II,” SE art instructor Kristina Elizondo said.
This part of history is often overlooked, she said.
Edsel has also written other nonfiction books such as Rescuing Da Vinci and The Monuments Men and has received the National Humanities Medal.
