As a part of the Carrier Library’s display of the Dust, Drought, and Dream Gone Dry exhibit, SE Campus will host An Environmental History of the Dust Bowl 11:30 a.m.-12:50 p.m. Sept. 29 in the North Ballroom.
University of Texas at Arlington history professor Christopher Morris will discuss the environmental issues that led to the Dust Bowl and would like students to take away one concept from his presentation.
“Know your environment before you mess with it,” he said. “If things go wrong, don’t count on technology to provide a long-term fix.”
Morris has written several publications on the intersecting histories of agriculture relations and nature in the southern United States and also teaches courses related to history and sustainability.
SE library services assistant director Tracey Minzenmayer organized the discussion.
“[Morris’ last talk] was very well attended and rated highly by students,” she said. “The Dust Bowl was one of the worst man-made environmental catastrophes in history. I am hoping that students come away from Dr. Morris’ talk with an understanding of how farming practices of the time made the effects of the 1930s drought so much worse.”
