NE Campus is paving the way in providing students resources to successfully transfer to a university.
A new initiative, the Transfer Academy, has three separate sessions designed to get students out of TCC and into the next step of their education.
“We have to support under-represented students … who are often first-generation college students,” student development services vice president Magdalena de la Teja said. “If you have an associate degree, you might be a great employee, but if you get a bachelor’s degree and emphasize that area, you might be a great supervisor.”
Students who attend all three academy sessions, have a 2.5 minimum GPA and 45 credit hours will be entered to win a $500 transfer scholarship.
The first will be noon-1:30 p.m. Feb. 13 in Center Corner (NSTU 1615A). It will cover transfer essentials such as application deadlines, admission requirements, educational resumes, scholarships and financial aid. Representatives from admissions and registrar, financial aid and the writing center will participate.
“Not all students know what questions to ask,” academic advisor Vanessa Ximenez said. “The process takes them from the beginning to end.”
The second session will be noon-1:30 p.m. on March 19 in Center Corner (NSTU 1615A). Area university representatives will conduct a panel-style discussion giving students the opportunity to have questions answered.
“We try to get a variety of schools,” Ximenez said. “Some are public. Some are private.”
The last session is a “tour de transfer” 10 a.m.-3 p.m. April 10. Students will take a tour bus from NE Campus to the University of Texas at Arlington for a walking tour of the campus. Lunch will be provided at the university campus. Then students will return to NE Campus.
“Even if you don’t want to go to UT Arlington, this is a great opportunity to hear information about deadlines and learn about what it’s like to be at a university,” de la Teja said.
To participate in the academy, students must register in the Transfer Academy (NSTU 1656A), at http://tccdne.volunteerhub.com or call Ximenez at 817-515-6531.
