Deutscher Samstag or “German Saturday” will be April 11 at the University of North Texas.
The NE German Club will travel to Denton to participate in this cultural day filled with workshops, games and other German-themed activities.
TCC will be among all levels of German students from Texas Christian University, UNT, the University of Texas at Arlington and local high school students.
NE German instructor and club sponsor Maddalena De Nicola said this is a fun way all German students can practice the language outside of class.
“Last year, the group from UTA in Arlington, they organized almost like an X Factor, but German style,” she said. “They would sing songs, and people got to vote for their favorite. Or you might get to make a gingerbread house, but the instructions are given to you in German. So this is something no matter what level you are at, you should be able to participate.”
De Nicola said that the festival typically has high numbers and varies “depending on the number of schools that participate.”
Students can receive awards at the festival.
“Afterward, there is a prize ceremony,” she said. “Because every workshop, the teachers give one prize sticker to the best student, the one who participated the most in that workshop. And then at the end, we all go out and eat lunch together.”
Club president Tara Deweese, who will attend for the second straight year, said it’s a great experience that not only teaches the German culture but connects students too.
“I met a couple of now really good friends when I went last year to the German Saturday who are also in the German program here,” she said. “But before, I didn’t know them and after that we became really close.”
The event is open to all levels of German students.
