Apply early and often for scholarships and grants, a speaker advised students attending Money for College presentation on NE Campus Sept. 2.
Consuela Mitchell, NE financial aid director, tours TCC campuses and local high schools to inform students about Pell Grants, scholarships and other alternatives to pay for college.
“That’s what we’re here for … helping and understanding,” she said.
Most colleges use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid to know which students qualify for all kinds of financial aid. Mitchell said applying early for financial aid is beneficial for students as well as searching the Internet.
“It’s real important to utilize the websites,” she said.
Her PowerPoint presentation covered grants like the Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, Federal Direct Loans, Texas Public Educational Grants, Texas Educational Grants for two-year community colleges, Tuition Equalization Grant and Fast Web.
“I just thought they had loans and federal grants,” NE student Kimberly Adam said.
Even though most students came to the speech to get credit for their class, some said they left with useful information on receiving money for college.
NE student Annissa Mosher said Mitchell did a great job explaining financial aid. She said she was surprised about the amount of grants available for community colleges.
“I thought the speech was informative, and I learned a lot,” Adam said.
A Mississippi State University alumna, Mitchell shared her own financial struggles with the students.
Mitchell recalled the days she borrowed money for food, books and even a refrigerator until her loans were dispersed. She also took part in the work study program to pay for some expenses.
“I had to work hard to get that car note paid,” she said.
