Nov. 13 NE students can explore the Native American process of learning and transmitting knowledge in Native Education and Community, The First Avatar 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the NE Galley (NSTU 1506). NE government professor Lisa Uhlir will discuss ways American Indians used observation and their views of the Earth as a complete and balanced community.

Nov. 14 SE student activities will celebrate 8 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Main Commons with a display of Native American artifacts, a demonstration on setting up a tipi and a performance from a Native American dancer. Nov. 18 Lt. Gov. Jefferson Keel of the Chickasaw Nation and president of the National Congress of American Indians will discuss current issues related to the Native American community in Tribal Nations Today: Educating the Broader Community 12:30-1:50 p.m. in the NE Galley (NSTU 1506). Keel is an advocate for Indian people and has been called to testify before Congress to provide assistance for Native American tribes and organizations.
Nov. 19 NE government professor Lisa Uhlir will present The Indian Boarding School Project: The Final Solution 5-5:45 p.m. in the NE Galley (NSTU 1506). Uhlir will discuss the loss of Native Indian culture through the establishment of American Indian Boarding Schools in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Nov. 20 NE government professor Lisa Uhlir will present Native American Healing: Alternative or the Real Tradition? 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the NE Galley (NSTU 1506). Uhlir will discuss the medicinal purposes of plants and herbs as well as examples of modern medications derived from nature.
Nov. 23 The Native Circles Retreat on NE Campus will provide attendees a shared, safe place to reconnect with their soul and role in the world. Using poetry, stories, solitude, reflection and deep listening, the values and traditions of ancestors will be explored. The retreat is 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Galley (NSTU 1506). Nov. 25 The history of North American indigenous people will be explored in Creating Understanding, From a Native Perspective 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the NE Galley (NSTU 1506). Academic advisor Marjeanna Burge will work to dispel Hollywood myths surrounding Native Americans with a crash course on their history and its relation to today’s Native people.
