NE swings with Mardi Gras parade

A Mardi Gras parade promoting the NE Campus production of The Taming of the Shrew will start at 10 a.m. in Parking Lot D1 on NE Campus Feb. 24.

The parade procession will start next to the Fine Arts Building, go around the chessboard and end at the library. Campus clubs will join the drama program to throw beads and promotional items.

Because the NE production of The Taming of the Shrew is set in the French Quarter of New Orleans, the parade will be a second-line style procession.

“Second lines are really popular in New Orleans,” drama instructor Julie Gale said. “It’s a spontaneous parade in the street.”

Spectators often join in the parade, Gale said.

“People just dance and have a good time,” she said. “People tend to get involved and behave in a way you’re not used to seeing them behave. It’s a big celebration.”

Clubs must complete a registration form to participate. All students, faculty and staff are invited to participate.
