Music classes combine for semester concerts

If SE students are stressed by finals, they might find relief to the tune of good music.

As part of a concert that is put together each semester by the SE music department, a trio of orchestrated events will be performed Friday, Nov. 30.

The students prepare for the concerts throughout the semester during rehearsals in the classroom.

“[They] seem excited this year about the concerts,” Dr. Greg Dewhirst, instructor of music and director of instrumentals, said.

“We are a growing department with new students joining all the time,” he said.

Classes participating in the concert include Concert Band and Orchestra, Jazz Combo, Concert Choir and Madrigal Singers.

Those who attend will also get a sneak peek of the upcoming dance studio to be included in the spring semester.

Dewhirst said the SE music department is looking at ways to increase the size of its music program and the fine arts department as a whole.

The programs, Dewhirst said, will also be of interest to non-music majors.

Joining Dewhirst in his efforts for the event are Mary Nesvadba, who works with the choir and singers, and Jamie Widner, who works with the dance studio.

Each event is free and open to the general public.
