Week two of the competitive spring intramural basketball tournament continued Friday afternoon with four games being played in the NE Campus gym in front of about 40 fans.
Instead of creating their own names, the teams were numbered.
Tipoff for Game One saw Team Four battling Team Five in the opener. Team Five had a 26-20 halftime lead. In the second half, Team Five could not hold the momentum and were outscored by Team Four 27-14. Team Four pulled away for a 47-40 victory. Leading scorers for Team Four were Rafael Escobedo with 13 points, and teammate Gabriel McLane with 12 points. Leading scorer for the losing team was Frank McNeal with 11 points.
Game two featured a brutal and physical game between Team One and Team Six. The game stayed close with the lead seesawing back and forth with Team Six taking a two-point lead at intermission. The two teams battled throughout the second half, but Team Six could not stop Mitch Zaelit, who scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half. With one minute left in the game, Team Six trailed by three points but could not rally for the win. In the end, it was Zaelit leading Team One to a 40-38 victory. Guard Donny Manor was the leading scorer for Team Six with 15 points.
Team Five played its second game of the day facing Team Three. Spectators saw a low-scoring first half as Team Five led 16-15. Steven Werner for Team Five made eight of his 10 points in the first half to help his team hang on to an early lead.
Team Five Coach Dolyn Mayo gave his team a halftime pep talk that apparently worked. Team Five came out and dominated the second half taking the lead and coasting to a 44-30 victory. Team Three could not stop Brelan Walker, who had 14 points in the second half. Walker hit four 3-pointers, four free throws and a bucket for a total of 18 points. Team Three’s Chris Goodman put up 10 points for the second straight week, but his effort wasn’t enough to stop Team Five.
The fourth and final game of the day pitted Team Four against Team One. Team One trailed by five points at the half. Team Four took command in the second half and won 42-33. McLane led Team Four with 19 points while teammate Ed Amerson added 11 points. Dustin Myers scored 11 points, and Zaelit added 10 points for Team One.
