Defending intramural title champions Liverpool returned to NW Campus last week ready to win this year’s indoor soccer title.

The first day of the 5-on-5 indoor soccer tournament opened March 3 with two games and an audience of about 40 students watching.

The first game matched Teams CJ & DJ Angels against Wacky Inflatable Arms.

Within three minutes, Luis Guiterrez scored the first goal of the match for Wacky Inflatable Arms. Guiterrez scored a second goal with 7:44 left in the first half.

In the second half, the CJ & DJ Angels scored three goals and took the lead away from the Arms. With 38 seconds left, Guiterrez came back to score, tying the game and forcing a shootout.

The Arms had a kick and a miss, but the first kick for CJ & DJ Angels went in.

Once again, Gutierrez scored to tie it up. The next player and first woman to make a goal was Azucena Vera, giving the Angels the win.

“This was such a good game. Both teams wanted to win,” said Rene Esteves, who watched the game while working out.

Liverpool played the second game of the day opposite the Free Agents.

“The team is back and ready to win it all,” said Pedro Garcia, a new member of the Liverpool team.

Liverpool would score four goals with no trouble before going into halftime.

In the second half with the crowd slowly shrinking, Liverpool scored three goals in the first four minutes.

The Free Agents would not go down without a struggle. Red Wesley scored the team’s first goal.

Liverpool’s Nahum Cruz responded in two minutes with a goal, giving his team an 8-1 lead.

The Free Agents would score one more goal, but Liverpool would prove why it won last year’s title, scoring three more goals to end the game, 11-2.
