Oct. 1 Entries are due by 5 p.m. in the student activities office for the NW Hispanic Heritage Month essay and creative works contest. Students can enter artwork, photos and/or essays to win a cash prize. Entries must fall under one of two topics: “What does Hispanic culture mean to you?” or “What does Hispanic heritage mean to you?”
Now-Oct. 15 A photo exhibit displaying the different types of cultures and traditions in the Hispanic community is in the Larry Darlage Center Corner (NSTU 1615A) on NE Campus.
Now-Oct. 15 Poster displays in the Walsh Library and the Student Center on NW Campus feature biographical information about NW Campus’ Hispanic faculty and administrators.
Oct. 3 President and CEO of the Fort Worth Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Asusena Resendiz will speak about her life as an immigrant’s daughter, entrepreneurship, business and management 1:30-3:30 p.m. in Action A on TR Campus. Oct. 6 The Latino American Movie Series continues with War and Peace on SE Campus 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the ESCT HUB. The film shows how Latino Americans served their country by the hundreds of thousands in World War II in the face of discrimination back home. Oct. 7 SE student activities and the library will host guest speaker Monica Rankin at 5:45 p.m. in the library’s quiet study area. The associate professor of history at UT Dallas will speak about Latin American history in The Zoot Suit Riots of Los Angeles. Refreshments will be provided. Oct. 8-9 The SE library will host a film showing and discussion of Documented 12:50-2:10 p.m. Oct. 8 and 8:30-9:50 a.m. Oct. 9 in the silent study area of the library. Created by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas after he outed himself as an undocumented immigrant in The New York Times to document his life. Oct. 9 NW student activities will throw a fiesta in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Waterfall Courtyard (outside WTLO). The celebration will feature cultural music, food, dancing and a custom car show.

Oct. 9 NE students can hear Pilar Candia speak 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Larry Darlage Center Corner on NE Campus. Candia’s community involvement has included assisting low-income families with education resources and serving on the board of North Texas Young Latino Leaders and as president of a local League of United Latin American Citizens chapter. Oct. 13 SE student activities is continuing the Latino American Movie Series with the film Pride and Prejudice 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the ESCT HUB. A film about the beginning of Chicano pride also discusses the past 30 years of immigration from Cuba, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Guatemala. This is a free event. Oct. 14 TCC staff, faculty and administrators can hear Fort Worth Independent School District board member Jacinto Ramos speak about his involvement with community youth regarding multiculturalism, community pride and building a strong cultural identity. Abrazando el Exito “Embracing Success” will take place 5:30-9:30 p.m. in the Hurst Conference Center’s Grand Ballroom at 1601 Campus Drive. Dinner and live entertainment will be provided.
