Patience necessary for search, says board

The board is currently taking no action in the search for a new chancellor.

Board president Louise Appleman said the board hasn’t met yet to discuss the search during a board of trustees meeting Oct. 29.

“The only thing I personally know for sure at this point is that this will not be a fast process. It will be slow,” she said. “There is no perfect candidate out there, and there probably will not be unanimity in our vote. This is the start of a new era. We will not replace what we have lost. We will start anew. If you know what you do or don’t desire in a future chancellor, send me an email. We need and want your patience and your trust as we move forward.”

Paralegal professor Karen Silverberg spoke during public comment asking for the board to include faculty during the search.

“We ask that you consider two matters of significant importance,” she said. “First, the faculty believes a national search is necessary to ensure that a candidate of the highest qualifications is found. Secondly, the faculty are very interested in helping and participating in choosing the chancellor.”

Acting chancellor Angela Robinson has signed a supplementary salary contract for $5,174 per month.

Her contract was agreed upon when the board of trustees went into executive session during the meeting. Robinson was appointed acting chancellor after the death of Chancellor Erma Johnson Hadley on Oct. 1.

During the meeting, Robinson’s action plan for 2015-16 was also approved by the board. Her outline includes developing an enrollment management plan and creating competency-based programs through TCC Connect.

Robinson shared that TCC’s Campus Carry Committee met Oct. 22 to begin discussion over regulations that will be put into place when campus carry goes into effect in August 2017.

“Probably, the most important thing they [the committee] will look at is which areas of campus are going to be gun-free zones,” she said.

The committee will meet again Nov. 19.
