SE Campus is offering Your Autism Choice, a course to help prepare students with autistic spectrum disorder for workforce and college settings.
Personnel from Spectrum Services and other partnerships are joining with SE to help in teaching the course. SE faculty will focus on preparing students for college while Spectrum Services will help students with socialization. Nita Haliburton, the course coordinator, said she is excited for the course to begin.
“This course is different from regular credit classes because of the interaction between students and instructors,” Haliburton said. “Sometimes, autistic students don’t know how to communicate well, so we want to teach them how to communicate and socialize.”
Haliburton points out that students with autistic spectrum disorder look to socialize with each other just like other students. They also desire to function in the workforce. This course will help students in both of these areas.
Along with communication skills, this class is also focused on helping students with school. Haliburton said this class will prepare them for college work.
“We plan on showing students how to perform research, write papers and manage their time,” she said.
The course began meeting Jan. 25, but registration is open until Jan. 28. It meets 10 a.m.-noon Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays.
This is the second time this course has been offered, and it is only on SE Campus. The cost of the course is $550.
