Organizations bring life to college

TCC students can get involved through numerous campus organizations, ranging from social clubs to academic and service clubs.

NE Student Government Association president Donna de Lisser said students get courage from being a part of student organizations.

“You stop asking yourself if you can do it, and you learn that you can,” she said. “If you’re given anything, you can step up and do it.”

Amy Sleigh, adviser for the Northwest Dance Company, said her organization focuses on community needs. Members work to raise funds for displaced children from domestic violence situations at the Assessment Center of Tarrant County.

“Students gain fundraising, advertising and motivational skills as well as building character to serve others who are in need,” she said. “They learn how to work on a common goal and then in turn go out into the community and share themselves, so they learn how to give.”

The TR International Students Association is for international students whose families have come from other countries as well as students who want to learn more about other cultures. ISA sponsor Lori Leach said the group provides a supportive environment for these students, gives chances to learn about diverse global cultures and participates in service activities that benefit the community.

“Students learn about diverse cultures and better ways to communicate with each other,” she said.

Each campus has clubs forming and dissolving each year as students come and go.

SE Campus currently has 43 clubs, including new ones like Imagine, a group to develop leadership goals, and the Friendship Center, a faith-based club, said student development associate Natalie Gamble.

Students who want to start a club need to develop a constitution, turn in an application to the student activities office on their campus and get students and a full-time faculty sponsor to sign up, she said.

“This year to be considered active, clubs will need seven active students instead of five, like previous semesters,” Gamble said. “If you can find the student interest, it really isn’t difficult to start a club.”
