Professor to present issues in Native American tribes

By Edith Mariscal

NE government professor and professional paralegal Lisa Uhlir will talk to South students Nov. 28 about the legal problems on Native American reservations.

Uhlir will discuss topics such as the dramatic rise in drug production, violence against women and poverty rates on reservations as well as the role of the media and the portrayal of native people in this struggle.

“The goal is to educate students on these issues as part of our Native American History Month,” student activities coordinator Ana Garcia said.

Many of these issues are a result of the inability to prosecute non-tribal members committing crimes on Native American land.

The discussion will also include an overview of the current Dakota Pipeline and Redskins football controversy.

The event will be free, and lunch will be served to all students. The presentation will be 12:30-1:30 p.m. in SSTU 2207 on South Campus.
