In a sea of horror suspense films, Bye Bye Man is one better fit for Netflix than the theater.
The movie as a whole wasn’t bad, but aspects of it don’t warrant the price of a $10 movie tick et.
The story is one of the more original things to come out recently, which is hard to do in the horror genre.
It follows three college students who learn the name of a monstrous grim reaper that attacks his victims through manipulative hallucinations. The only way to beat the villain is to push him out of their thoughts entirely.
Sounds much cooler in concept than in actuality.
The makeup and costuming of the Bye Bye Man himself wasn’t very scary. He looked like he could have been made up at a local charity haunted house. His sidekick Hellhound was even less scary. The giant hound looked like a meatball with legs. The duo probably won’t be giving anyone nightmares.
The hallucinations that plague the people who know his name are a cool aspect of this film. They leave the audience unsure of what the monster has created in the minds of the characters and what is real. That uncertainty gives the film a suspenseful edge.
Overall, the movie is better suited for a night at home with close friends than a night out at the movie theater. Save some dollars and wait to see it.
