Viewpoint: Citizens should remain hopeful in new term

By Raegan Scharfetter/ se news editor

Not too often do we hear celebrities in support of President Donald Trump, but when we do, we can expect backlash.

In a recent interview, actress Nicole Kidman spoke about her belief in democracy saying America should support whoever’s the president.

“He is now elected, and we as a country need to support whoever is president because that’s what the country’s based on,” Kidman said.

As expected, many in the country reacted negatively to Kidman’s statement.

Social media shortly exploded with comments such as “Would you follow Hitler just because he has a title?” and “I think it’s time for Nicole Kidman to move to Russia.”

Although a lot of people disagree with Kidman, I fully agree with her stance. Citizens cannot support democracy only when they like the end result.

As a country, we need to fight through our differences and support our president because that is what democracy is all about.

Negativity and hatred will only push us further and further away from our goals and hopes for the country.

Whether you voted for Trump or not, he is going to be our leader for the next four years, and we can either wallow in pity or stand together and make positive changes.

Yes, I do not agree with plenty of things Trump has said or done, but to not give a man a chance who has dedicated his time and energy into benefiting the country off of a personal belief is not justified.

Over the past year, America’s biggest downfall has been lack of unification, and this is the ultimate test for America to either sink or swim, individually or whole.

The time to be angry or sad is now over, and it’s time to unify and make the changes necessary for our country to become better, stronger and more successful.
