Campus employment services help students get back into workforce

“Hiring Now” The signs may be posted, but many students have difficulty landing the jobs. However, career and employment services on each campus can help job-seeking students.

“Career services offices are a combined effort for all five TCC campuses,” said Vicky McCleery, NE administrative assistant.

Each semester, all five campuses provide a “keys to success” calendar that lists events varying from an open house to information sessions. They also provide classroom presentations and general sessions on interviewing, résumé writing, networking and other job search or career success topics, McCleery said.

NE offers a non-traditional job fair each fall, usually held outdoors in October with 10 to 20 employers in conjunction with the campus fall festival.

Monica Miranda, South career services director, also offers various aids during the school year.

“[We] constantly have recruiters on campus,” she said. “Some come every week, and some come monthly.”

Miranda said her office provides career planning through career assessments.

“If a student is undecided about their major, their counselor can send them in for one of three different assessments,” she said. “These assessments help them think about a career or major.”

South also offers job development, which includes mock interviews and résumé updating, and assists with filling out job applications.

“Two out of the five campuses serve the community, so you don’t have to be a student to get help,” Miranda said.

McCleery said NE Campus is smartphone-accessible because so many students and employers use them.

The NE office provides reading materials such as Job Choices 2012, a magazine with articles ranging from “getting the most out of your job search” to “workplace e-etiquette.”

Not only is it available at the office, but students can scan the smartphone barcode in the corner to read the magazine online.

McCleery said that what’s unique about NE is that it has “two full-time employees with bachelor degrees and global career development facilitator certifications,” which she described as basically being really good at finding jobs.

SE Campus also holds a job fair each semester and a service learning fair. Other services available on SE are résumé critiquing, interview coaching and mentorship programs, said Quietera Lomax, senior office assistant.

In addition to those services, TR handles work study, student assistant and professional development programs. They also conduct mock interviews and host job fairs at both locations during the fall and spring semesters, said TR director Kristen Vinson-Wright.

Career Coach, an online service available to all students, is on the TCC website in the Career and Employment link under Student Services. When clicking on a Career Coach icon on that opening page, students are directed to that service’s site where they have two options. From the first, “What kind of job are you looking for,” students can maneuver through updating and/or correcting their résumé and can look for the job they want. If they choose the option “Select a major you are interested in,” they link to a job outlook of position titles, hourly wages and current employment numbers.
