Water sports class offers instructed training on Trinity

Beginning in March, active students can take an outdoor sports class for the last half of the semester.

The Trinity River Vision Authority approached TCC to offer a rare opportunity to students. The course will give students an elective physical education credit that won’t replace PHED 1101 but will give students interested in water sports some experience. Jason Wooten, TR physical education instructor, will facilitate the course with trained representatives present as well.

The class includes training on kayaking, wakeboarding and paddleboarding.

During class time, students will use rented equipment on the Trinity River to train with representatives from some of Fort Worth’s outdoor sports partners.

Shana Cate, planning and development manager at Trinity River Vision Authority, said the course will not only promote a healthy, active lifestyle but will also bring more of the public to the river.

Cate said schools such as the University of Texas at Austin and Texas State University offer similar opportunities to students.

“This brings a unique opportunity to TCC that not many other colleges have the ability to provide,” she said.

Students can now register for the class in WebAdvisor under PHED-1107-58000.
