Firefighting academy sees increase in enrollment as NW Campus program sparks students’ interest

Men and women looking for firefighting careers are registering in increasing numbers for a class at the state-of-the-art firefighting facility on NW Campus. The 14-week training class offered at the Fire Academy will help students earn a certificate and learn the skills they will need to join the profession.

South instructor writes novel

It took 40 years, but one South Campus instructor has completed a decades-long goal — his first novel. Dr. Morris Maniscalco, South Campus biology teacher and adjunct instructor since 1981, has written An Eternal Love, a religious romance story of the 21st century. The story carries readers through a series of decision-making issues, a life-threatening accident, suicide, rape, marital concerns and love.

Back when health just meant a person was not sick, William McAdams, NW Campus health/physical education adjunct professor, became aware of the benefits of wellness and began sharing them with others. Now that wellness, the idea of physical, social and spiritual well-being and their impact on the body, is gaining recognition in corporations, schools and the private sector, McAdams continues to share his knowledge with new audiences, more receptive than previous ones.

Vision 2015 Team meets to discuss public feedback after community summits

TCC is on the way to finalizing its five-year strategic plan.

Members of the Vision 2015 Team met March 1 to discuss with a consulting group the feedback from the participants of focus groups and community summits.

NE Campus seminar helps wih stress

Students attended a NE Campus stress seminar last week with questions for the presenters.

HPE instructors Lynn Fieser and Eli Koenn provided the answers at Success over Stress on March 4.

Koenn, who specializes in Pilates and yoga, and Fieser, currently working on her doctorate in public health, united to create a group session with a primary focus on minimizing everyday stress.

Danica must win to deserve praise

Numerous athletes have had so much success, it is a mystery to me why news media give race car driver Danica Patrick the royal treatment for accomplishing nothing in NASCAR’s sport of stock car racing.

The media have a tendency to give critical praise and attention to athletes who have yet to prove themselves. Patrick, currently the media darling and marketing goddess in NASCAR, is a perfect example.

Players focus on teamwork in South tournament

South Campus basketball players showed hustle and speed in their intramural games March 2.

In the first game, the Starter Loggs defeated Team 4, 50-46.

Throughout the game, the Starter Loggs held the lead. At halftime, they were up, 24-17.

Dra’ Sean Gray of the Starter Loggs said one advantage his team had was height.

Our Hope The Bird Dogs

With the recent release of their first CD Our Hope, the Texas country band The Bird Dogs hope to become the next big thing in Texas music.

The group is fronted by local radio host George Dunham, who fans of sports radio giant The Ticket will already know from his work on the Dunham & Miller morning show. But it’s clear with this record that fans of the Texas country genre will know him for his musical abilities as well.
