SE club to host healthy eating camp for children

Parents who want to teach their children how to choose the right kinds of foods, learn to prepare a healthy lunch and show them that exercise can be fun will have that chance on SE Campus.

The Student Dietetic Organization of TCC will hold a Nutrition Rocks Camp for children from second through sixth grades 9 a.m.-1 p.m. April 21 in ESEE 1310.

Christina Liew-Newville, dietetic technician program director, said first lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign promotes healthy eating and physical activity in children and the overall community.

“We are trying to do something for this area, for Arlington, for our own community,” she said. “Just want to try to get the message out, help children to develop healthy eating habits and get involved in more physical activity.”

Children will learn how to put together a healthy meal, complete a hands-on activity in preparing lunch and a snack, taste different foods they may have not tried before and participate in fun, physical activity, Liew-Newville said.

“Together, nutrition and physical activity go hand in hand, so you can’t separate them,” she said.

The cost for the camp is $35 for the first child enrolled and $30 for each additional sibling. A healthy lunch will be provided for the children. The camp will be divided into three age groups: second grade, third-fourth grade and fifth-sixth grade.

To register, parents need to complete the form at nutritionrockscamp.blogspot.com or they can get a form from SE student services.
