Saturday classes not burden

It’s not news that snow covered North Texas last month. It’s not news that schools were closed because of it.

However, a radio caller thought it was news when the Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD canceled classes and scheduled a Saturday make-up day for students.

A mother called news radio station KRLD 1080 AM to be part of Ernie and Jay’s noon Flip Off segment.

The segment allows callers to rant about whatever they want as long as it’s kept short and entertaining.

The woman griped that HEB ISD would be out this past Friday for a professional development day, yet students must attend school on a weekend.

“The kids are off of school this Friday for a professional development day — whatever that’s supposed to mean,” she said over the air. “However, we missed two days because of inclement weather, so the kids now get to make it up on a Saturday in April.

“Parents have to figure out how to care for their kids this Friday so that the teachers can come in and work. But now the kids have to go to school on a Saturday when they have lots better things to be doing — I’m sure they’ll be doing a lot of learning in school on a Saturday. Flip off.”

While it’s an understandable struggle to find ways to take care of children when they have the day off and parents must work, remember that the staff development days were  scheduled prior to the school year. Keep in mind that those days were made so the school and learning can be improved for students.

Inclement weather days were also scheduled ahead of time to account for bad storms like the snow days North Texas has had recently.

While family time, sporting events and other things have been scheduled or sleeping late occupies our agendas on Saturdays, parents must remember that there is something else that isn’t news.

Education is important as well — especially to the future generation that will run things after us.

Plenty of TCC students take weekend courses, and plenty of TCC students have children.

This shouldn’t be an argument since the focus of any weekend class is to better the education of students and better their future.

Flip off about that.
