Under the Backlight (3.5 stars)
Under the Backlight might not be the grandest album Rilo Kiley has made, but with its poppy sweetness and Jenny Lewis’ vocals, it is worth a listen.
The CD delves into the L.A.’s underworld with songs dealing with the less innocent of lyrical matter.
As indie’s Kewpie doll, Rilo Kiley never has an edge to its music, even if Lewis is crooning about a failing relationship.
Instead, the tracks have an almost serene aura to them—a “don’t worry, be happy” tone.
But the sweet tunes are fun to listen to, especially “Breaking Up” and “Silver Lining.”
