South to host Langston Hughes show

By Julissa Treviño/south news editor

South Campus is looking back in time for Black History Month to the days of the Harlem Renaissance with The Langston Hughes Project, a multimedia production.

The production will include a performance of African-American writer Langston Hughes’ 12-part poem, “Ask Your Mama: 12 Moods for Jazz,” scored with musical cues.

The Monday, Feb. 11, performance will be accompanied by additional poetry, a jazz quartet and life-size visual images.

The poetry, spoken by Dr. Diane Richardson, and music, played by the project’s music director and composer Dr. Ron McCurdy, are juxtaposed with images of black artists and photographers.

Although the poem was written in the 1960s, the production pays tribute to the struggles of black artistic and social freedoms leading up to the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s when Hughes first came into the national spotlight.

The program, sponsored by student activities and the African American Heritage Committee, will be 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in the SSTU Living Room.
