Tips for staying safe in high water:
The national slogan for avoiding high water is “Turn around, don’t drown.” If there is high water, do not drive through it.
Anyone caught in a car in high water should get out of the car, get on the roof and wait for help to arrive.
When it is known that a low-lying area may flood, homeowners should put all personal belongings and important papers up as high as possible then leave for higher ground.
During a sudden or flash flood, homeowners should save as many personal belongings as they can and get to the highest point in their house, preferably the roof, and wait for help to arrive.
If a person is struggling in the water, do not try a rescue. Avoid becoming another victim. Instead, get help as soon as possible.
When you are struggling in the water, tread water or float to conserve energy and wait for help to arrive.
The most important thing to remember is to not panic and stay calm.
