Women’s history to feature on SE

By — Ryon Boswell

SE student activities presents It Takes More Than ‘Grace and Gumption’: Texas Women and the Struggle for Citizenship March 25.

Stephanie Cole, history associate professor at the University of Texas at Arlington, will help attendees understand the circumstances that kept Texas women from achieving equal rights until the 20th century, even after significant milestones such as the passing of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote.

The main topic Cole wants to address is why in a state known for its women of “Grace and Gumption,” “Sass and Savvy” and “Unflinching Courage,” it took so long for them to get the right to vote.

Cole won the Liz Carpenter Award for Best Book in Women’s History in Texas for her work on the book Texas Women: Their Histories, Their Lives.

The presentation will be held 10:40-11:35 a.m. in the Carrier Library (ESED 1200) on SE Campus. For more information, call SE student activities at 817-515-3595.
