Mental health aid classes scheduled

By Tabitha Redder/nw news editor

The first of two Mental Health First Aid courses will be offered Feb. 21 and 28 on NW Campus to raise awareness of mental disorders along with their common treatments, warning signs and impact.

Anna Hinman, special services coordinator, will present the interactive workshop over a two-day time period to teach attendees a five-step action plan so they will be armed with the knowledge to help someone in crisis. Those who attend both meetings can be certified as a Mental Health First Aider.

This isn’t the first Mental Health First Aid course Hinman has taught, and she has received good feedback from participants in the past.

“I received lots of emails after the first one. They seemed to enjoy it,” Hinman said of the first session of the workshop. “It’s very interactive. A lot of participation is involved.”

The workshop will be held noon-4 p.m. in the Michael Saenz Conference Center (WACB 1123) on both days, but registration is required and seating is limited. Lunch will be provided both days. The course is open to all students, staff and faculty.

For more information or to register for the course, contact Hinman at 817-515-7132.
