Students came together to let off some steam by pulverizing their peers during South Campus’ intramural dodgeball tournament April 16.
Student worker Jonathan Henderson, who served as the main referee, quoted fictional character Patches O’Houlihan from the 2004 movie Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story when explaining the rules.

“Remember the five D’s of dodgeball: dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge,” he said.
Four games were played during the short but satisfying 45-minute event. Because there were only 13 participants out of the 25 that signed up, the teams were mixed up after each game to keep things interesting.
Bowling pins were also incorporated so that each team had to defend five pins from being knocked over or else the opposite team would be deemed victorious. Of course, players could still win if they just pegged all of their opponents too.
South student Aaron Tardgett said that even though he preferred Gator Skin brand rubber dodgeballs to the ones used, he still enjoyed playing.
“I love dodgeball,” he said. “It was a little short, but it was fun.”
Intramural coordinator Alyssa Petty was happy overall despite some of the no-shows.
“I look at it as quality over quantity,” she said. “Besides, there were plenty of spectators as well, and the students who really wanted to be there showed up.”
She also said that there were a lot of familiar faces mixed in with new participants.
“Students who were in the gaming tournament (and other events) came back for dodgeball, and that is showing retention of some sorts,” she said. “And people who I haven’t seen in any of the other sports came out, and that made me happy.”
