Students advised to apply early for foundation scholarships

Applications for an estimated 200 TCC Foundation scholarships for 2012-13 are available online. Scholarships are available in specific fields of study, on a merit basis or for first-generation and new TCC students.

“There are a lot of scholarships available for students at every campus and in different fields, we invite and encourage [students to apply],” said foundation donor relations officer Liz Sisk.

The scholarships are funded by donations from outside foundations, community members and TCC employees.

The awards are not automatic, however. Students first must complete a three-part application. The application matches students’ answers to any scholarships for which they qualify.

Foundation scholarship specialist Rhonda Seyfried said students should start the process early, not because of competition, but to allow time for correcting any errors.

“Do your homework on your references,” she said.

She suggested planning ahead while gathering information on the two professional references required. It is important not only to use references who speak highly of you, she said, but also to collect accurate contact information and make sure at least one reference is a TCC faculty member.

Students should give extra thought and time to researching the essay portion, Seyfried said.

“It takes you from being an applicant to personalizing it,” she said. “Your connection with the scholarship committee depends on what you write in the essay.”
