New honors chapter focuses on education

By Tristian Evans/reporter

South Campus’ Alpha Zeta Zeta organization, a local chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, will have a chapter installation ceremony 5:30-8 p.m. Nov. 13.

Kappa Delta Pi is an international honor society for education majors. Olga Nowlan will serve as the chapter’s president.

“This chapter is starting new for the South Campus,” she said. “It’s important because it will benefit education majors in the future. It’s a way [for students] to give back to the community while working on their degree.”

Nowlan said that as one of Alpha Zeta Zeta’s first projects, the group will start a mentorship program with Fort Worth Cassata High School. She said the members hope to make a positive impact on the life of students and encourage them toward success.

South Campus education department chair Altheria Gaston will serve as one of the advisers of the organization.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for education majors at TCC who excel academically,” she said. ”Hopefully, [Alpha Zeta Zeta] will be around for years to come.”

South Campus adjunct instructor Laurie McAdams, another club adviser, said the organization can offer education majors hands-on-experience when it comes to working with students, and that was her motivation for getting it started.

“I think that in this downturned economy, administrators are being more selective about who they hire,” she said. “This could help [education majors] be more marketable to those administrators when they are looking for employment.”

McAdams, who also teaches at Tarleton State, said Tarleton and other four-year institutions offer scholarships for education majors, and participating in Alpha Zeta Zeta makes TCC students more likely to get those scholarships.

Students must meet minimum requirements for an invitation to join Kappa Delta Pi’s local chapter. They must have a 3.0 GPA or higher, be an education major, have at least 30 hours at TCC and be enrolled in, have taken or plan to take 12 hours of education courses at TCC.
