Professor presents tips on improving skills in exchange of ideas

By Paul Paez/reporter

An assistant professor of English said she wanted to guide students to their own insights and own discoveries during a seminar Oct. 26 on Trinity River Campus.

Dr. Mary French and Meryl Cope, economics instructor, presented Tips for Talking to Your Professor to help improve their communication skills and to let the student provide feedback or share experiences they had when communicating with professors.

“A vast amount of teachers want to help you and want you to succeed,” she said.

French provided visual aids and handouts that included tips on conversation starters, listening, conduct, and telephone and e-mail etiquette along with what not to say during a conversation.

French said students can improve student/professor communication by learning from mistakes and learning how to retain the material learned, rather than finding the fastest way to improve a score.

Student Joey Taylor said the points the speakers provided will help him to approach professors properly to achieve better grades and better communication.

French had a main goal for the seminar.

“For students to learn how to take control of their own destiny,” she said. “Speak up for themselves.”
