National scholarship allows students to study overseas

By Laurance Traylor/reporter

TCC students have the opportunity to study abroad on many distant continents like Asia, Europe and Africa.

The Boren Scholarship provides funding for students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in most study-abroad programs. The scholarship is funded by the National Security Education Program, which focuses on geographic areas, languages and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security.

TCC is not new to the scholarship since it was the first two-year college in the nation to have a recipient, said Floreen Henry, South French assistant professor and TCC’s contact for the scholarship.

“To be awarded and be able to study abroad is life-changing for the student,” Henry said. “The award is directed toward freshmen and sophomores. TCC students, in general, have a great opportunity at being recipients.”

One of the requirements is students must have a declared major although the program does focus on “fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security,” according to the website.

While abroad, students will learn the fundamentals of the native language and ways it can be used in their field of study.

The Boren Scholarship offers the undergraduate recipient up to $20,000 to attend school abroad in addition to working within the U.S. federal government in one of a wide variety of federal offices for a minimum of a year following graduation.

TCC has had two students receive the award.

“When a student wins, I feel like a winner,” Henry said. “I love supporting the students. I love being the Boren Scholarship representative.”

Students interested in applying should contact Henry at 817-515-4628 or floreen.henry@tccd.edu. The deadline for Henry to review a student’s preliminary information is Jan. 10. For additional information about the scholarship, students can go to www.borenawards.org.
