South students lending helping hand to elderly, children

By Nacole Battee/reporter

Reaching out to its community, the African American Student Organization on South Campus is holding a sock drive for the elderly and a toy drive for children in the Tarrant County area.

AASO is asking for the donations of new white socks and new toys to be brought to South Campus to help make the holiday better for the less fortunate.

The group has placed donation boxes in various locations around the campus. The boxes will be out until Dec. 13 in the Student Center, Counseling Center, Academic Classroom Building and HPE Building.

The organization also plans to help with the African American Heritage Month and participate in the Texas A&M-Prairie View Southwestern Leadership Conference in January.

The club is currently reorganizing and encouraging students of all ethnicities to be a part of AASO.

Meetings are held every Thursday 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the SSTU Texas Room on South Campus.

The meetings include leadership development, academic support, guest speakers, discussions, problem solving activities, community outreach and career guidance.

Annie Dobbins, South Campus counselor and club adviser, said the club wants students to build a rapport with school organizations as a testament to personal interest, skills, intellectual and spiritual characteristics.

These qualities can be reflected toward leadership positions in communities long after college, Dobbins said.

The organization strives to unite the ethnic minority population, establish equity within school curriculum and expose students to every aspect of the campus network.

Students interested in participating in AASO can reach Dobbins at 817-515-4745 or at annie.dobbins@tccd.edu.
