TCC students have a number of scholarships available to them during the long terms. Summer students, however, don’t have as many options.

The South Campus Women’s History Month Committee has focused its fundraising during March to make a scholarship available for South students attending summer school.

“We think it’s important to offer this scholarship because it is the only one offered during the summer, and many students need the help,” said Evelyn Wilson, English associate professor, scholarship chair and WHM Committee luncheon co-chair.

This scholarship is open only to students currently attending South Campus. It offers $500 to help pay for classes and books, and the WHM Committee will award two to students who participate, Wilson said. The students must have completed at least six credit hours by spring 2011, be enrolled in at least six hours for summer classes and have a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Students must complete the scholarship application available online or on South Campus. A copy of an unofficial TCC transcript or other college transcript must be included in the application. Students will also need two letters of recommendation from instructors or other professionals.

To complete the application, students must write a 500-word essay describing a woman they admire and her influence on them. This woman can be from history or today.

Once the application packet is completed, students must submit it to the technology/behavioral/social sciences division office (SFOD 1403), the behavioral sciences department office (SFOD 1407) or Evelyn Wilson (SFOE 1621A). All applications must be submitted by May 3.

A WHM committee of four members will then read and review applications and award two students with a scholarship.

Scholarship recipients will be announced by May 12.

“I’m really excited,” Wilson said, “about the scholarship and all the WHM committee is doing.”
