NE to offer free dental care to children

By Trevor Howard

The TCC dental hygiene program is partnering with Save a Smile 8 a.m.-noon Nov. 4 on NE Campus to provide children with oral hygiene instruction, X-rays and fluoride.

The program aims to showcase TCC’s dental hygiene program and how it has teamed up with a local organization to give back to the community. Save a Smile uses the help of volunteer dental hygienists and oral health professionals to improve children’s health through treatment of oral disease.

“The TCC Dental Hygiene Clinic and dental hygiene students have partnered with Save a Smile since 2005,” dental hygiene assistant professor Lisa Englehart said.

Founded in 2003, Save a Smile specializes in preventative and restorative dental care for children from low-income families.

All students in the program participate in the event each semester while completing the two-year Associate of Applied Science degree, Englehart said.

“Many graduates continue to help Save a Smile by volunteering their time as registered dental hygienists in the private practice sector,” she said.

Parents are welcome to bring children of all ages to protect and prevent them from diseases that affect children who do not see dentists regularly.

The dental hygiene program’s senior class encourages all visitors to attend the event and learn more about the basics of dental hygiene.
