Panel to focus on sexuality, gender issues

By Hannah Lathen

South Campus’ Spectrum club will host a Transpanel, an open forum where students can ask questions regarding the LGBTQ community, Nov. 14.

Spectrum secretary Elijah Brewer says this semester’s discussion will be split into two segments.

The first portion will cover gender identity, and the second will cover sexual orientation.

Brewer says this event will make people more educated on the do’s and don’ts on interacting with the LGBTQ community.

“I feel personally that it is important because I am a non-binary student,” he said. “I identify as trans-masculine, so having professors who are more knowledgeable and more understanding on how to treat other students is very important to me.”

Spectrum president Tyler Jackson believes this event is important because it informs people who have never been exposed to the LGBTQ community.

“The people that want to know, it gives them a chance to know more about it and how to be more accepting and friendly to people who are different from them,” Jackson said.

Jackson says he is looking forward to the reactions from the audience.

“We always have one person that has a really eye-opening moment and is like ‘Wow, you aren’t too much different from us.’”

The first part of the panel is 12:30-1:45 p.m., and the second part is 2-3:15 p.m. in the SSTU Forum Room.
