Giving a speech is like a performance, according to NE speech adjunct instructor Janet Lovrien. Like any type of performance, she said there are tips and tricks to help.
Backed by her 15 years of teaching experience, Lovrien led 35 students at her workshop “How to be a Presentation Master” Oct. 16 on NE Campus.
“I expected it to help me with speaking at TCC,” said NE student DJ Darling when asked about his expectations leading up to the seminar.
Lovrien spent the allotted 50 minutes walking attendees through the 10-step process for preparing a speech.
“Practice is key,” Lovrien said.
She focused on the importance of preparation when asked to create a speech or presentation.
“I’ve always been nervous about speaking in front of a class,” said NE student Christian Pacheco.
When asked about dealing with stage fright, Lovrien said it helps for speakers to channel that anxiety into motivation to prepare properly and being able to laugh at themselves.
“Really good speakers learn how to use their nervousness to their advantage,” Lovrien said.
