Texas’ official poet laureate to teach classes, speak on SE

By Karen Gavis/se news editor

Literature lovers can visit with the official Texas poet laureate April 5 on SE Campus.

Jan Seale, who has authored seven poetry books as well as short fiction, non-fiction and children’s books, will present A Visit with Jan Seale 2012 Poet Laureate 1-2:30 p.m. in the SE Campus’ Roberson Theatre.

Student activities associate Amy Staley said Seale is a native Texas artist, which reflects in many of her writings. In addition to speaking, Seale will arrive early on SE, and a few classes will have the opportunity to learn from her teachings.

According to her website, www.janseale.com, Seale teaches writing workshops nationally as well as in the Rio Grande Valley, where she lives.

Seale’s work has appeared in many publications and won numerous awards.

Out of curiosity, English professor Elizabeth Joseph signed up to have Seale teach one of her English II classes.

“I was just curious as to how a poet laureate would teach as opposed to an average teacher like me,” she said.

Joseph said she asked Seale to talk about The Last Duchess, a poem by Robert Browning, which Joseph includes as part of her English II curriculum.
