Trip to New York City will give NE, NW dance students slice of Big Apple

A trip to the Big Apple Feb. 27-March 2 is in store for select NE and NW dance students.

Dance faculty chose NW students for the trip from the Mosaic Dance project, NW’s semi-professional dance company, and NE students were chosen from the Movers Unlimited Touring Company.

Dance associate professor Kim Jackson said students who wished to attend had to write an essay outlining how a trip to New York City could enhance their dance careers.

“During the trip, the dancers will take classes at the Broadway Dance Center,” she said. “We will do a service learning project with Dancers Responding to AIDS, and students will attend a performance of the Broadway show Chicago.”

Students do pay for their travel, lodging and dance classes, but fundraising has offset some of the costs. Jackson said for dancers chasing their dream, the trip is priceless.

“New York City is the hotbed for dance,” she said. “Most dancers dream of traveling to New York and living the life of a performer. This trip is designed to make those dreams accessible by giving them a taste of the heart of the dance world.”
