Event to bridge cultural connections on campus

By Michael Foster-Sanders/campus editor

NE Campus is hosting the Harmony event at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 15 in the Center Quad area. TCC is hosting the event to promote harmony and diversity while sharing information about other cultures.

The event includes an art walk, music, dance and poetry meeting for students.

NE Campus president Allen Goben hopes the event will bridge cultural connections and ease some of the tension due to lack of communication.

“We’re addressing the issue of all the divisiveness that’s going on in society,” he said. “People are so against each other philosophically. And civil engagement is breaking down. And I asked the question what can we do about that?”

NE communication, arts and entertainment dean Linda Quinn felt excited about the idea of students coming together for diversity.

“Dr. Goben came up with the idea, and I think it’s a wonderful opportunity for our NE TCC family to get together,” she said. “We’re going to be using the arts for students to express their individuality, but to come together in harmony.”

NE English associate professor Rebecca Balcarcel wants students to know that the campus administration cares about them.

“I want students to see everything we have to offer as an institution,” she said. “Students need to know that they have a place here, and we value them.”

Assistant to the president Fred Schmidt said this will illustrate the braiding of different cultures on campus.

“This event will show how it’s a unique harmony that goes between cultures,” he said. “I’m excited since this is my first time on a campus working with student groups, and the NE TCC community will enjoy the activities that are planned.”
